On the detection of subrelativistic heavy Magnetic Monopoles with IceCube — •Thorsten Glüsenkamp1, Mohamed Lotfi Benabderrahmane2, Christian Spiering2, and Christopher Wiebusch11III. Physikalisches Institut, RWTH Aachen, D-52056 Aachen — 2DESY, Platanenallee 6, D-15738 Zeuthen

Cosmic superheavy GUT monopoles (∼ 1017 GeV), remnants from the era shortly after the Big Bang, are predicted by several theories and may move at subrelativstic speeds due to their high mass. The search for such particles can be performed exploiting the Rubakov-Callan effect which predicts the subsequent catalysis of proton decays along the path of the monopole through matter. This talk concentrates on the detection of the cherenkov-light produced by these decays in IceCube. For this approach monopoles of different speeds and mean interaction lengths for the catalysis are simulated. We investigate possible trigger strategies to optimize the sensitivity of IceCube. This approach can also be applied to the detection of Q-Balls and nuclearites.
