A novel cryogenic Penning trap setup called PENTATRAP is presently under construction at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Heidelberg. The project aims for high-precision mass measurements on single highly-charged and stable ions related to e.g. tests of non-perturbative QED in strong electric fields as well as neutrino oriented mass determinations. In order to achieve the needed accuracy of δ m / m =10−11, non-destructive cryogenic detection methods will be used at a stack of five Penning traps. Thereby, two traps will be used for real time monitoring of the magnetic field whereas the relative mass measurements will be performed in the central three traps. The apparatus is planned to be coupled to the EBIT at MPI-K and later to the HITRAP facility at GSI Darmstadt. The design studies of the project as well as the present status of the experimental setup will be presented.
