Two-temperature modeling of DC and ICPplasma torches in argon at atmospheric pressure — •Margarita Baeva, Dirk Uhrlandt, and Detlef Loffhagen — INPGreifswald, Felix-Hausdorff-Str. 2, 17489 Greifswald, Germany
DC arc plasma devices and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) torches have been used over the years as an effective tool in various industrial applications. Magnetically rotating arcs have been increasingly adopted in DC arc plasma devices for diagnostics and material processing, modern circuit breakers, etc. In this work, we present self-consistent calculations of the plasma parameters of atmospheric pressure DC and ICP plasma torches based on MHD models including a two-temperature description (different electron and heavy particles temperature). The results obtained are compared with those from local thermal equilibrium (LTE) models. In an LTE model the plasma composition and the transport and thermodynamic properties are calculated in advance as a function of the gas temperature at constant pressure. Models based on the LTE assumption yield narrower and shorter high temperature region as compared to the non-LTE model. The presence of external magnetic field in the DC torch yields to stronger deviations from LTE. As a result, electron and heavy particle temperatures differ in the arc core in about 10 % underscoring the need for a two-temperature treatment. Deviations from rotational symmetry are observed in both ICP and DC plasma torches indicating the need for a three-dimensional description.
