Two-dimensional modelling of awaveguide-based microwave plasma source — •Margarita Baeva, Andre Boesel, Jörg Ehlbeck, and Detlef Loffhagen — INP Greifswald, Felix-Hausdorff-Str. 2,17489 Greifswald, Germany
The electromagnetic field distribution inside a waveguide-based microwave plasma source operated at 2.45 GHz and used for atomic emission spectroscopy of gaseous species is presented. Equations for determining the electromagnetic field are derived from Maxwell’s equations and are solved for given smooth spatial profile of the plasma density estimated from experimental findings in argon and helium at atmospheric pressure. The model implies a two-dimensional and time-harmonic description yielding the average microwave power absorbed by the plasma which is compared with measured values. It enables the variation of the plasma size and position as well as of the electron density maxima. Simulations in the absence of plasma are performed to study the electric field strength built in the ceramic discharge tube which is important for the discharge ignition.
