Fluid modes in a spherically confined Yukawa plasma — •Hanno Kählert and Michael Bonitz — ITAP, Christian-Albrechts Universität zu Kiel, 24098 Kiel
The normal modes of 3D dust crystals (so-called Yukawa balls) have recently been measured in experiments [1]. They can be used to determine important parameters such as the particle charge or the frequency of the confinement potential. Here we present a theoretical analysis of the normal modes of a spherically confined Yukawa plasma based on the solution of the linearized fluid equations, which has previously been performed for confined ions [2]. The mode frequencies are found to depend solely on the normalized cluster size κ R, where R is the cluster radius [3] and κ the inverse Debye length. In the Coulomb limit the results of [2] are recovered. The fluid modes are compared to the exact crystal eigenmodes computed from the Hessian matrix of the discrete N-particle system.
