Nanocomposite thermoelectric materials made by co-ball-milling of lead telluride and an added inclusion phase of Sb2Te3, BiSbTe3, Bi2Te3 or AgSbTe2 were investigated. A cold-pressing/annealing approach was applied to the resulting powders and the thermopower and the electrical conductivity of the products were measured in the temperature range of 50-300 K. The two quaternary phases Pb10BiSbTe13 (n-type) and Pb10AgSbTe12 (p-type) show the most promising power factors within the series of nanocomposites investigated. These experimental investigations are supported by first principle calculations for the bulk and the surfaces on the different materials.
