The decay probability in open quantum billiards with regular and chaotic dynamics is explored by means of experiments on superconducting microwave cavities with openings on the boundary. The scattering-matrix formalismus is used to quantify the leaked microwave flux at the opening. The decay behavior is closely related to the resonance widths. In the semiclassical regime, the decay resembles the corresponding classical probability of escape. The field distributions of some modes play also a crucial role.
