We present the results of recent measurements at the free-electron laser Hamburg (FLASH) on two-photon double ionization of helium at a photon energy of 52 eV. Inspecting the momentum distribution of He2+ ions we find first experimental evidence for an effect termed ’virtual sequential ionization’ recently predicted in theoretical calculations [1]. Comparing our experimental data with state-of-the-art calculations solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation we find good overall agreement except for cuts along the polarization direction, where we exhibit a siginifcant shift towards larger momenta [2].
