The preparation of a highly ordered monolayer of Single-Molecule-Magnets (SMM) is one of the main preconditions for a technical application of these molecules. The adsorption of these SMMs on surfaces is associated with difficulties due to the often low chemical stability of these molecules in the vicinity of a surface.
The used Mn6Cr-complex [1] has a C3-symmetry and a spin ground state of St=21/2. This complex is a trication and needs therefore counter ions for electrical charge compensation. Tetraphenylborate, lactate and perchlorate came into consideration for this function.
Mn6Cr-SMMs were prepared on different substrates by a droplet technique in air at room temperature. The samples were characterized by means of an AFM operating in non-contact mode, using tips with cone radii of approx. 2 nm.
An island-like growth was observed on SiO2- and Si3N4-substrates, whereas on HOPG and mica the Mn6Cr-SMM adsorbates preferred a layer growth. Also an influence of the used counter ions was observed on different substrates. The measured thicknesses of the layers are consistent with the Van der Waals radii of the Mn6Cr-SMMs.
