Crystal transformation processes studied via EBSD-illustrated for the case hematite/magnetite — •Wolfgang Wisniewski — Otto-Schott-Institut Jena
The phases hematite and magnetite were formed within the same crystal body during the crystallisation of a glass with the composition 16 Na2O * 10 CaO * 49 SiO2 * 25 Fe2O3. A strict orientation relationship between the phases is described in which the [111]-direction of two magnetite orientations is parallel to the [0001]-direction of the hematite phase. It is thus argued that hematite (Fe2O3) is the phase primarily crystallised and magnetite (Fe3O4) is the result of a phase transformation after the primary crystal growth.
