The {1 1 0} surfaces of fcc metals show an intrinsic anisotropy due to the rectangular surface unit cell. This anisotropy is even more pronounced in case of the (1 × 2) missing row reconstruction. The clean Pd(1 1 0) surface does not show the tendency to reconstruct. But under the influence of hydrogen we find missing row reconstruction. After deposition of small amounts of Au (< 1 ML) on the unreconstructed Pd(1 1 0) surface pseudomorphic Au islands are observed, whereas in the case of higher Au amounts (> 2 ML) the resulting Au layer shows the characteristic (1 × 2) reconstruction, which still remains pseudomorphic to Pd(1 1 0) [2]. We have used these reconstructed surfaces as a substrate for the ordered ("templated") deposition of phthalocyanine molecules.
Phthalocyanines have attracted considerable attention owing to their promising application in optical and electronic devices. Especially the adsorption behaviour and film growth have been investigated.
STM investigations under UHV reveal a specific adsorption behaviour of the metal-free phthalocyanine molecules, which are oriented along rows of the reconstructed surfaces, and detailed structure models are discussed.
