In recent years self assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been extensively studied because of their well-defined structures resulting from simple dipping preparation. An ideal system for the understanding of self-organisation processes are alcanethiols that were widely examined during the last decades. These molecules can be prepared with different head groups leading to different applications in molecular electronics, nanotechnology, bio-sensing, and corrosion inhibition. One possible head group is thiophene. The orientation of thiophene-2-thiol adsorbed on Au(111) has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Thiophene-2-thiol molecules are found forming highly ordered adlayers. High-resolution STM reveals well ordered molecular stripes of different length. On the golf surface the stripes arrange displaced with respect to the substrate lattice forming a two-dimensional molecular network.
