Multiscale surface analysis of DLC-coated plastic materials of medicinal relevance — •Christian B. Fischer, Simon Zentgraf, and Stefan Wehner — Universität Koblenz-Landau, Institut für Integrierte Naturwissenschaften - Physik, 56070 Koblenz, Germany

The application of synthetic material for medicinal purpose is accompanied by essential requirements. In addition to the basic performance of materials such as flexibility, elasticity, slippage, fracture strength and chemical resistance, further determinants for the choice of plastics suitable for medicine are long term stability, durability and biocompatibility. In particular surface properties of these materials have to be fitted to the intended use. To overcome mismatches of optimized parent material to suitable surface characteristics the corresponding surface has to be modified. The determining factor for such alterations is the preservation of basic material performance by the benefit of additionally advantages like adhesive, repellent or antibacterial behavior. We show examples for such a surface optimization of medical relevant plastic devices. Materials are coated with films of diamond like carbon (DLC) on a nanometer scale achieving surfaces with improved properties. By a multiscale microscopic analysis of the respective surface structures of raw and carbon coated materials routes are shown to adjust the coating procedure for the material and its specific needs.
