Investigations of FeTe single crystals as function of temperature show a relation between the magnitude of the ordered magnetic moment and the A1g phonon linewidth at low temperatures. Based on microscopic modeling using density-functional theory this effect is attributed to the Fe spin state and orbital degeneracy. Our observations show the importance of orbital degrees of freedom for the Fe-based superconductors with large ordered magnetic moments.
