Sr2IrO4 is a Mott insulator due to the interplay of strong spin orbit coupling and crystal field interactions. The strong spin orbit interaction is evident in our study via pronounced phonon anomalies and multiphonon scattering. In addition we observe broad high energy modes that are attributed to exchange scattering on a square plane with Jeff=1/2.
