Synthesis and characterization of low dimensional magnetic spin systems — •Johanna Frielingsdorf, Ralf Müller, Simon Scharffe, Martin Valldor, and Thomas Lorenz — II. Physikalisches Institut, Universität zu Köln
The physics of low-dimensinal spin systems is fundamentally controlled by quantum fluctuations and therefore a hot topic.
Thus, the preparation of materials with suitable magnetic subsystems, that experimentally realize various theoretical model hamiltonians, is highly desireable.
The synthesis and characterization of spin-chain systems such as BaCo2V2O8, BaMn2V2O8, SrMn2V2O8, CoNb2O6, and Cs2CoCl4 is subject of this poster.
These compounds provide transition-metal oxides with partly filled 3d shells and hence are suitable to study spin systems from S=1/2 to 5/2.
BaCo2V2O8, as a quasi one-dimensional S=1/2 Ising system, belongs to the alkaline earth (A)- transition metal(M)- vanadates AM2V2O8. BaMn2V2O8 on the other hand is an S=5/2 nearly isotropic Heisenberg system.
CoNb2O6, known as columbite, is a quasi one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet and shows a complex interplay of quantum criticality and geometrical frustration.
A quasi one-dimensional frustrated XY antiferromagnet is represented by Cs2CoCl4, where a spin-liquid ground state can be reached by applying magnetic fields.
