Models Beyond the Standard Model — •Marcela Carena — Theoretical Physics Department, Fermilab, U.S.A. — Enrico Fermi Institute, University of Chicago, U.S.A

The many impressive discoveries and measurements made in particle physics over the past few decades have allowed the construction of a theoretical framework - The Standard Model - which successfully describes the interactions among all of the known, fundamental particles of nature. This theoretical description relies on the existence of a new particle, the Higgs boson, expected to be responsible for the generation of mass of all the fundamental particles. This particle is expected to be observed at collider experiments soon. Moreover, some of the most fundamental questions of science:

-- The explanation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe,

-- The nature and origin of Dark Matter and Dark Energy,

-- The unification of all the forces, including gravity,

require new physics beyond the Standard Model. I will consider models beyond the Standard Model based on exciting ideas calling for enhanced symmetries and extra dimensions of nature, and discuss the role of such models in providing solutions to the crucial questions of our field. New physics searches at colliders, together with cosmological data, are shaping our understanding of physics at the weak scale, and will provide crucial tests of new physics in the near future.
