Muon Production Height and Longitudinal Shower Development in KASCADE-Grande — •Paul Doll1, Kai Daumiller1, Pawel Luczak2, and Janusz Zabierowski21Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), 76021 Karlsruhe — 2Soltan Institute for Nuclear Studies, 90950 Lodz, Poland

The Muon Tracking Detector (MTD) in the KASCADE-Grande experiment allows to study the angular correlation between muon tracks and the shower axis and in an CM energy range from about 1.4 - 8.0 TeV. Besides the investigation of the muon pseudorapidity the muon production height allows an almost model independent investigation of the mass composition of the cosmic ray flux. Compared to the MC-simulation for proton and iron primaries (CORSIKA, QGSjet-II and FLUKA 2002.4) an excess of muons in the simulations in the region of the first interactions above 15 km may indicate that produced pions there have too high an energy and do not decay. Those muons missing in the data have also large pseudorapidity and this deficit is also seen in the experimental muon pseudorapidity distributions.

This work was supported in part by the German-Polish bilateral collaboration grant (PPP-DAAD/MNiSW) for the years 2010-2011.
