Studies of a software-based inter-telescope trigger scheme for CTA — •Joachim Hahn, German Hermann, and Konrad Bernlöhr — MPI für Kernphysik, Saupfercheckweg 1, 69117 Heidelberg

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the next generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory, will consist of over 50 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes of different sizes, covering an area of up to several square kilometers. The development of a new inter-telescope trigger scheme is necessary to optimally utilize the potential of such an array. A flexible, cost-effective approach is a software-based 'asynchronous array trigger' where the inter-telescope trigger decision is made in software, based on the relative arrival times of the Cherenkov light at the different telescopes. To understand the requirements for an effective realization of such an array trigger, Monte-Carlo studies were conducted. The results of these studies are presented.
