Simulating a Scintillator Array to Enhance the Pierre Auger Observatory — •Javier Gonzalez1, Ralph Engel1, and Markus Roth2 — 1Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Institut für Kernphysik, Karlsruhe, Germany — 2Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Institut für Experimentelle Kernphysik, Karlsruhe, Germany
The Pierre Auger Observatory surface detector consists of an array of more than 1600 Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD). We now consider an array of scintillator detectors to be spread over part of the surface detector area. The WCDs and the scintillator detectors respond differently to the muon and electromagnetic components, which will improve the primary mass composition sensitivity of the surface detector. We have developed a simulation and reconstruction chain to study extended air showers using the scintillator array together with the current WCD array. We consider different geometrical configurations and analyze how the scintillator array can give a measure of primary mass composition and the number of muons in the air shower.
