Early tt Resonance Searches in ATLAS — Volker Büscher, Frank Fiedler, Tobias Heck, •Weina Ji, and Lucia Masetti — Institut für Physik, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, 55099 Mainz, Germany
The ATLAS experiment at the LHC is exploring a new energy regime in particle physics. The heaviest known particle, the top quark, is expected to play a crucial role in revealing new physics beyond the Standard Model. Many theoretical models have predicted heavy resonances which strongly couple to top quarks, such as the Z′ boson, the Kaluza-Klein gluon, and the top quark condensate. At present, we are focusing on early searches of new resonances in tt final states. Several reconstruction algorithms have been derived in order to cope with different tt topologies, and are being implemented in the current data analysis. In this talk, we will present the result of early tt resonance searches in ATLAS, with emphasis on the background estimates from the Standard Model tt and W+jets events.
