Measurement of the b-jet cross section with the ATLAS detector — •Johanna Fleckner1,2, Markus Elsing1, and Stefan Tapprogge2 — 1CERN — 2University of Mainz
The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva, has recorded 45 pb−1 of proton-proton collisions in 2010 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. This contribution presents the measurement of the b-jet production cross section in three jet-pT bins between 25 and 85 GeV using semileptonic decays b → µ X. The measurement of the b-jet production cross section is an important milestone in the path towards understanding proton-proton collisions at the new energy frontier. Ingredients to the differential b-jet cross section measurement are the fraction of selected jets originating from b → µ X decays, the integrated luminosity and the efficiency for detecting and selecting an event. The latter is a product of trigger, reconstruction and selection efficiencies. This contribution will detail all steps in the analysis with a focus on the extraction of the b-purity from data. This is done using two methods, the pTrel analysis and the so-called “System 8” analysis. The measured b-jet cross section will be compared to theoretical predictions.
