Feasibility studies of a novel µ—→3e experiment — •Rohin Narayan, Sebastian Bachmann, and Andre Schoening — Physikalisches Institut, University of Heidelberg, Germany

Lepton Flavor Violation (LFV) in the charged leptonic sector is highly suppressed in the framework of Standard Model. But there exist certain SUSY and GUT models which place these processes at todays experimental reach. The experimental limits for these processes put constraints to several beyond Standard Model theories.

Our aim is to probe for LFV in muonic decays in the decay channel µ —→ 3e . The present upper limit for the branching ratio for this process is 1.0×10−12. With tracking detectors based on thin layers of Silicon, we aim to reach a sensitivity of 10−16, 4 orders of magnitude smaller than the present upper limit. We present the results of a feasibility study carried out using Geant4 simulations. The proposed experiment would take place at Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland, which has a continuous muon beam line of intensity 109 µ/s.
