Beam Loss Monitors for ATLAS and the LHC — •Hendrik Jansen1, Heinz Pernegger1, and Norbert Wermes2 — 1CERN — 2Universität Bonn
With nominal beam currents circulating in the LHC, a Beam Loss Monitor (BLM) is an important safety measure. High losses can possibly damage sensitive parts of the experiments. On the other hand, it’s necessary to measure the beam conditions as an important input to other subdetectors and further analysis of data. Therefore ATLAS installed the Beam Conditions Monitor (BCM), which is situated at η = 4.2. Also, the Beam Instrumentation Group plans to install BLMs inside LHC magnets for a more direct measurement of losses.
The forward region at ATLAS is exposed to high fluxes, hence the BCM detector must be very radiation hard. High demands are made as well due to the necessity of having a very fast respond to beam conditions, thus fast and short signals are mandatory. In case of high losses, the detector material of choice should not saturate. A BLM for the LHC has to meet similar criteria. These goals can be achieved by using diamonds as the detector material in combination with very fast read-out electronics.
The data taken with the ATLAS BCM during 2010 run will be presented for pp collisions at various beam energies and compared to lead ion collisions. Furthermore, results from Transient Current Technique (TCT) measurements that have been carried out at various temperatures will be presented in order to show the capability of using diamonds as a BLM at cryostatic temperatures.
