Next Generation ATLAS Pixel Front End IC for Upgraded LHC Luminosity — •David Arutinov, Malte Backhaus, Marlon Barbero, Laura Gonella, Tomasz Hemperek, Michael Karagounis, André Kruth, Hans Krüger, and Norbert Wermes — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Bonn, Bonn, Deutschland
In the coming decade, a series of upgrades is foreseen for the Large Hadron Collider located at CERN which will lead to increased luminosity. Various parts of the ATLAS detector will require upgrades to cope with the new conditions. The pixel detector will suffer from increased particle rate and radiation dose. A new Front-End IC FE-I4A was developed in a 130 nm CMOS technology to face the needs of the upgraded pixel system. The new pixel detector requires less material, a new powering scheme, smaller pixel size (better resolution) and increased radiation tolerance. FE-I4A features a digital architecture tuned to cope with the higher particle rate. A dedicated test system was developed for FE-I4A characterization. FE-I4A is available since fall 2010 and all the main blocks of the IC have been successfully tested. This talk will present the FE-I4A focusing on the digital architecture and the test results.
