Measurement of the temperature dependence of pulse lengths in an n-type germanium detector — Iris Abt, Allen Caldwell, Bela Majorovits, and •Oleksandr Volynets — Max-Planck-Institute for Physics, Munich, Germany
Germanium detectors are operated at liquid nitrogen temperatures to reduce the number of electrons in the conduction band. The mobility of the charge carriers is temperature dependent and thus also the rise time of the pulses induced by the drifting charge carriers.
The temperature, T, dependence of the pulse lengths for an 18-fold segmented n-type germanium detector was measured in the temperature range of 77 – 120K. The interactions of 122 keV photons originating from 152Eu were selected and pulses as observed on the core and segment electrodes were studied. In both cases, the T dependence can be well described by an eκ/T ansatz, where κ is a fit parameter.
