Study of the Electron Charge-Flip Process in ATLAS — •Patricia Sauer, Sebastian Schätzel, and André Schöning — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Heidelberg

Same-charge dileptons are a promising search channel for New Physics because Standard Model background is small. However, electrons can undergo a charge-flip process by radiating a hard Bremsstrahlung photon which subsequently converts asymmetrically, imparting most of its energy to a positron. In this way, most of the electron energy is transferred to a positron and an opposite-charge event–of which there are plenty in the Standard Model–is reconstructed as a same-charge event. We study the electron charge-flip using Zee events recorded in ATLAS and develop strategies to suppress this background.
