Investigation on resolution influencing effects in beam profile measurements using scintillation screens — •Minjie Yan, Gero Kube, Stephan Wesch, Bernhard Schmidt, Christopher Behrens, and Christopher Gerth — DESY, Hamburg. Germany
The experience from modern linac based light sources showed that OTR diagnostics might fail even for high energetic electron beams because of coherence effects in the OTR emission process. An alternative way to overcome this limitation is to use luminescent screens, especially inorganic scintillators. The scintillation process is based on atomic excitations of luminescent centers, and therefore is not sensitive on micro-structures in the particle bunch causing coherent radiation. While OTR is emitted in transition or reflection direction, scintillation light is radiated isotropically. Therefore it can be well separated from OTR by a suitable observation geometry. However, the spatial resolution of scintillation screens for transverse particle beam profile measurements can be considerably influenced by the observation geometry. Therefore simulations with the ray-tracing program ZEMAX have been conducted to investigate the performance of the spatial resolution for different scintillator materials and observation geometries. Further test experiments will be performed at FLASH (DESY) and MAMI (IKP Mainz) to study the resolution influencing factors. The results from these studies will help to develop a beam profile monitor design in accelerators such as FLASH and the European XFEL at DESY.
