Pulse forming network management for linear electromagnetic accelerators — •Christian Schuppler, Farid Alouahabi, and Markus Schneider — French-German Research Institut (ISL), F-68301 Saint Louis, France
Capacitors serving as primary energy source connected to a Pulse Forming Network (PFN) consisting of inductors, crowbar diodes and high voltage switches can be employed to accelerate objects (about 100 gram) up to several thousand meters per second in a linear electromagnetic accelerator. The driving force in this case is the j x B force acting on the electrically conducting objects (j: current density, B: magnetic field). From an electrical point of view such a system is not straight forward because the electrical properties of the load (the accelerator) are dependent on both, the position and the velocity of the object. Faults within the electrical circuitry of the PFN can arise thereof, if not taken into account. The contibution to the conferece will discuss an example of such a fault encountered during the operation of a linear electromagnetic accelerator. This incidence causing damage to the crowbar diodes will be linked to the above mentioned object position and velocity dependance of the load. Furthermore, the way as we have solved this problem is presented.
