Boosted-frame PIC Simulations of FEL Lasing — •Martin Madel — LMU Munich

Understanding FEL lasing heavily depends both on numerical simulations and analytic models. Many codes in use incorporate coarse assumptions and anticipate physical behavior tied to these coarse assumptions.

Our approach, by contrast, is to base our analysis on the most basic classical equations, the relativistic Maxwell-Vlasov system, and to study the system by tracking the radiating electron bunch in a boosted frame calculation. Aside from reducing simulation volume, this serves to bridge the vast discrepancies in computational scales that characterize our physical situation: An undulator with field period in the range of centimeters, and an electron bunch undergoing density modulations and emitting light on the scale of x-ray radiation wavelengths. We profit from Lorentz contraction and the Doppler effect to take these scales close to each other and enables us to tackle situations beyond those with slowly varying radiation envelopes or similar approximations.
