Nowadays there are many space missions in planning, which require special thrusters for a high precision positioning of the space crafts. A very promising concept shows the Radiofrequency Ion Thruster (RIT). In this type of ion thrusters the plasma is produced in a gas vessel by inducing a radio frequency discharge. The main values of interest are the ionization degree, electron temperature, plasma density and the losses of the charged particles. The use of a simulation leads to an easy and fast way to optimize the configuration. A further advantage of the simulation is the possibility to predict all plasma parameters without any influence on the system. We investigate the effect of different vessel sizes on the ionization. Furthermore we analyse the influence of the RF-power on the plasma density. Finally we compare the results of our simulations with some experimental datas.
