Investigation of reactions relevant to nuclear transmutation at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf — •Evert Birgersson — Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf
At HZDR we have investigated (n, n’γ), (n, f) and (n, γ) reactions. Knowledge of the cross sections for these reactions is important for future Generation IV nuclear reactors since the neutron spectrum in the reactor depends on these cross sections. In these reactors, apart from fission of the main fuel, also fission of the long lived actinides will occur and the aim is to avoid production of long lived nuclear waste. At the photo neutron source nELBE the inelastic scattering cross section of 56Fe and 23Na have been measured using a double time of flight technique. Development of a multi plate ionization chamber for actinide fission cross section measurement is ongoing, where the use of digital signal treatment is necessary due to the high α-activities of some targets. The γ-ray spectra measured in (n, γ) and (γ, γ’) reactions were used to deduce information on the photon strength function, which is an important ingredient for modelling neutron capture reactions. These investigations are part of the joint research project TRAKULA (TRAnsmutationsrelevante Kernphysikalische Untersuchungen Langlebiger Aktinide). The progress of the whole project will be presented. Supported by BMBF under contract No. 02NUK013A.
