The odd-mass nuclei 229Th features an uniquely low lying isomeric state with an excitation energy below 15 eV which is comparable to atomic level energies. The neighbouring odd-odd isotone 230Pa is nearly unexplored; its level structure is completly unknown and even the spin assignment of the ground state is solely based on theoretical considerations without experimental confirmation.
The 231Pa(d,t) reaction at a beam energy of 22 MeV was employed to investigate 230Pa. In total 63 states below an excitation energy of 1.5 MeV were identified using the Munich Q3D magnet spectrometer. These states are members of 12 rotational bands. Assignments are based on comparison with a semi-empirical model. Six new values for the Gallagher-Moszkowski splitting and two values for Newby shifts were obtained in the actinide region. The spin and partity of the ground state is experimentally determined to be a 2−-state. Nilsson configurations and energy splittings of the first two rotational bands in 230Pa are discussed in view of the odd-mass isotone 229Th.
