Status of the KATRIN Experiment — •Volker Hannen — Institut für Kernphysik, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, Münster
The KATRIN (KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino) experiment aims at a direct and model independent determination of the electron antineutrino mass with a sensitivity of 200 meV/c2 (90% C.L.) via a measurement of the endpoint region of the tritium beta-decay spectrum. The experiment consists of a windowless gaseous tritium source (WGTS), differential and cryogenic pumping sections and a tandem of a pre- and a main-spectrometer, applying magnetic adiabatic collimation (MAC-E filter concept) to guide beta electrons with sufficient energy onto a segmented silicon PIN detector.
At present the experiment is being set up at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
Several major components have been installed and tested. In the Tritium Laboratory Karlsruhe the demonstrator of the WGTS has been set up. The differential pumping section DPS2F has been installed and initial tests have been completed. A large range of test experiments and background studies have been performed at the pre-spectrometer. It will be moved to it’s final position in the spectrometer hall in 2011. The installation of the air coil system and the inner wire electrode is being completed, such that the commissioning of the main spectrometer and the 148 pixel silicon detector can take place in summer 2011.
The talk will present results of recent test experiments and provide an outlook on the commissioning activities.
