Development of a trigger system to test and calibrate ALICE-TRD super-modules — •Jonas Anielski — Institut für Kernphysik, WWU Münster
The ALICE experiment at the LHC is designed to investigate an extreme state of matter produced in ultra–relativistic lead–lead–collisions: the quark-gluon plasma. As a subdetector of ALICE the Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) identifies high momentum electrons and provides a fast trigger, based on charged particle reconstruction and electron identification.
For the super-module assembly in Münster a trigger system has been developed to allow for testing and calibration with cosmic rays. The central trigger unit is a Caen V1495 VME module with an Altera Cyclone FPGA. The system provides triggers for the super-module and the Global Tracking Unit (GTU), which collects the data from the super-module, performs online tracking and provides a trigger contribution on that basis. The trigger unit processes signals from the GTU and 90 scintillators with a total active area of 7.4 m2, which are positioned above and below the super-module to detect cosmic rays, to generate two classes of cosmic ray triggers. Several internally generated triggers for testing purposes are also available. We will present the hardware design and the control software of the trigger system and discuss the applications and performance of the trigger system.
