In a recent work experimental evidence for hyperdeformed states in U isotopes was given [1]. From such highly elongated nuclear states much narrower fission fragment mass distribution is expected than from non-resonant fission as predicted in a recent calculation [2]. In order to demonstrate this effect we performed a preliminary time-of-flight correlation measurement for the fission fragments employing the 235U(d,pf) reaction.

The experiment was carried out at the Debrecen cyclotron using 9 MeV deuteron beam on a 90 ug/cm2 thick 235U target. The essence of the experiment was the measurement of the time-of-flight (TOF) distribution of the two fission fragments in coincidence with the outgoing protons in order to get information on the mass distribution of the fission fragments originated from the decay of the hyperdeformed states. The TOF of the fragments was measured by a 4pi position sensitive fission detector equipped with delay-line readout while a four-fold Si-detector array was used to determine the energy of the ejected protons.
