Small Animal PET with MWPCs — •Jennifer Bersch1, Don Vernekohl1, Konstantin Bolwin2, Johannes Wessels1, and Klaus Schäfer2 — 1Institut für Kernphysik, WWU Münster — 2European Institute for Molecular Imaging, Münster
While scintillation based detectors represent the vast majority of clinical PET scanners, a high resolution PET scanner for small animal applications based on Multi Wire Proportional Chamber (MWPC) technology has been developed at CERN many years ago. This technology offers higher resolution and competitive performance in terms of sensitivity compared to state of the art commercially available small animal PET scanners. Our research focuses on the improvement of the performence and the simplification of the manufacturing of these multi wire proportional chambers. The detectors offer sub millimeter spatial resolutions and can be built in almost arbitrary size. This poster demonstrates simulations for the sophisticated detector geometry and shows first tests using self-triggered readout electronics. This project is part of SFB 656 MoBil - Molecular Cardiovascular Imaging - From Mouse to Man - at the University of Münster.
