Avalanche Photo Diodes (APDs) operated near LN2 temperature are one of the detector types that will be used for the detection of low levels of fluorescence light produced in the laser spectroscopy experiment SPECTRAP at GSI. Measurements of hyperfine transitions in highly charged ions, e.g 207Pb81+, require single photon detection capabilities from the UV to the near infrared. APDs of the type S0223 manufactured by Radiation Monitoring Devices have been investigated to cover the wavelength region from about 300 nm to 1100 nm. Operated in a LN2 cooled cryogenic test bed inside a vacuum chamber in combination with a low noise preamplifier the optimum noise to gain ratio was determined. With a gain of about 10,000 at this point 635 nm single photons from a low level light source have been detected with photo detection efficiencies of 60%-70%. First tests at NIR wavelength (1050 nm) confirm a PDE of roughly 20%. We will also present the final design of the APD detector setup developed for measurements at the SPECTRAP experiment.
