Acoustic-Seismic Monitoring of an Underground Final Repository - Measurements and Evaluations — •Jürgen Altmann1 and Horst Kühnicke21Experimentelle Physik III, TU Dortmund, 44227 Dortmund — 2Fraunhofer-Institut für Zerstörungsfreie Prüfverfahren, Institutsteil Dresden, 01326 Dresden

Without reprocessing spent fuel from nuclear power plants contains plutonium which could be used for nuclear weapons. Thus, final repositories need to be put under safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to detect potential access, during and after the emplacement phase. To find out if acoustic and seismic methods can be used to detect undeclared activities in an underground repository in salt, the German Support Programme for the IAEA has tasked us to do measurements in the exploratory mine in Gorleben, a potential site. We recorded sound and vibration at several positions underground and at the surface while various mining activities were carried out singly and in parallel. The data are analysed with respect to amplitude versus distance and detection range, spectral characteristics and source localisation.
