Oxidation of iron films on MgO(001) — •Tobias Schemme, Martin Suendorf, Frederic Timmer, and Joachim Wollschläger — Barbarastr. 7, 49076 Osnabrück
The oxidation of ultrathin iron films on MgO(001) substrates was investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy and electron diffraction. First a layer of iron was deposited on the substrate using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) at room temperature. The iron films were annealed several times in a thin oxygen atmosphere (p(O2) = 10−6 mbar). To determine the dependence of the annealing temperature on the oxidation process, the iron films were heated up to different temperatures (RT until 573 K). The stoichiometric composition and the structure of the iron oxide films were investigated by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED), respectively. Analyzing the Fe 2p and the Fe 3p signal, the iron oxide films show stronger oxidation at high temperatures. While the iron films were not completely oxidized to Fe2O3 after a few oxygen treatsments at low temperatures, the iron films annealed at higher temperatures showed full oxidation to stoichiometric Fe2O3.
