The use of uncoated indexable inserts and micro tools is a common procedure for cutting metals. In order to achieve an effective removal of material, a uniform abrasion is required at the cutting edge of the tool. Despite great thermal resistance of the tool there is a high risk of oxidization at high temperatures so that the sealing of the inserts is indicated. An aluminium oxide (Al2O3) coating performed by Atomic Layer Deposition is a method to positively influence the cutting parameters as well as the wear and tear.
