Single molecule magnets (SMMs) represent a class of metalorganic compounds which show magnetic bistability of purely molecular origin and a rich quantum spin behavior below a certain blocking temperature. Because of their superparamagnetic properties and the additional benefits of a monodisperse size distribution, an inexpensive fabrication through self-assembly and the chemical tunability of their molecular ligand shell, SMMs are particularly interesting for applications in spin-based data storage and quantum-computing technologies.

Here we present a detailed study of several Mn12 derivatives chemically bound to a gold surface. We investigated the structural and electronic properties of the Mn12 molecules in a self-assembled monolayer by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) and X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopy (XPS, XAS). Low temperature STM images are shown, revealing a submolecular resolution. Furthermore, we implemented electrospray ionization (ESI) for the deposition of Mn12 molecules in ultra high vacuum. In contrast to a wet chemical preparation procedure, this method offers the advantages of a control over the surface coverage and a free choice of the substrate and the molecular ligand.
