Small Animal PET with Gas Detectors — •Don Vernekohl1, Jennifer Bersch1, Konstantin Bolwin2, Johannes Wessels1, and Klaus Schäfer2 — 1Institut für Kernphysik, WWU Münster — 2European Institute for Molecular Imaging, Münster
While scintillation based detectors represent the vast majority of clinical PET scanners, a high resolution PET scanner for small animal applications based on Multi Wire Proportional Chamber (MWPC) technology has been developed at CERN many years ago. This technology offers higher resolution and competitive performance in terms of sensitivity compared to state of the art commercially available small animal PET scanners. Our research focuses on the improvement of the performence of such multi wire proportional chambers and also to test the use of Micro Pattern Gas Detectors(MPGD) for PET applications. The detectors offer sub millimeter spatial resolutions and can be built in almost arbitrary size. This poster demonstrates simulations for the sophisticated detector geometries and shows first prototype testings. This project is part of SFB 656 MoBil - Molecular Cardiovascular Imaging - From Mouse to Man - at the University of Münster.
