Longitudinal Shower Development Studies Using Muon Tracking — •Paul Doll1, Kai Daumiller1, Pawel Luczak2, and Janusz Zabierowski21Karlsruhe Institut of Technology (KIT), 76021 Karlsruhe — 2Narodowe Centrum Badan Jadrowych, 90950 Lodz, Poland

The Muon Tracking Detector (MTD) in the KASCADE-Grande experiment allows to study the angular correlation between muon tracks and the shower axis with high precision and for protons in a CM-energy range from about 1.4 -8.0 TeV. The muon production height allows an almost model independent investigation of the mass composition of the cosmic ray flux. An experimental pseudorapidity gap of about 3 units may support the production of heavy mass in CM-system. The deficit of muons in the data for only the highest CM-energy in the region of the first interactions above 15 km, compared to MC-simulations for proton primaries (CORSIKA, QGSjet-II + FLUKA 2002.4), is observed. This may indicate that produced pions do not decay or corresponding muons missing in the data escape the rapidity window of the MTD.

This work was supported in part by the German-Polish bilateral collaboration grant (PPP-DAAD/MNiSW) for the years 2011-2012.
