Fake estimation and its application on the measurement of processes with multi-lepton final states in ATLAS at the example of ZZ production — Nektarios Benekos1, •Jochen Meyer2, and Thomas Trefzger2 — 1Department of Physics, University of Illinois, Urbana IL — 2Lehrstuhl für Physik und ihre Didaktik, Universtität Würzburg
In proton-proton collisions the Z boson pair production and a following decay into two lepton pairs, either muons or electrons, has a predicted combined cross-section of approx. 29 fb. Due to the geometrical and kinematic acceptance as well as lepton selection criteria the number of observed events is further reduced. With a better understanding of the ATLAS detector, especially of its Muon Spectrometer it is possible to extend the acceptance of muons up to a pseudo rapidity of 2.7 which has a non negligible impact on the number of candidate events respectively the statistical uncertainty of the measured ZZ production cross-section. A very precise measurement of this quantity is important since it could give hints at the Higgs or models beyond the standard model like an anomalous gauge boson coupling. In addition to the current result of ATLAS there are dedicated selection criteria for muons in the far forward region and the related fake estimation presented.
