The Large Hadron Collider is opening up a new energy regime for exploring possible signatures of new physics. Many theoretical models of physics beyond the Standard Model have predicted the existence of new heavy particles which strongly couple to top quarks. In this talk, we summarise the search for such resonances decaying into tt pairs in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2011. The search is performed in the lepton plus jets final state with the tt pair reconstructed from individually resolved decay products. Limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross-section times branching ratio to top quark pairs for leptophobic topcolor Z′ bosons and Kaluza-Klein gluons.
