Development of A Time Projection Chamber Prototype for ILCIvor Fleck, •Saiqa Shahid, and Ulrich Werthenbach — University of Siegen

A Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is one of the two main proposed tracking detector concepts for the planned International Linear Collider (ILC). The ILC-TPC group at University of Siegen is doing research using different components like the readout systems (pads and Timepix chip) and different gas mixtures for the TPC prototype. The prototype uses a gas electron multiplier (GEM) structure for gas amplification in the form of a stack having 3 GEMs. Two mixtures of Argon-Methane (90:10) and (95:5) are used to fill the volume of the prototype, and a Timepix chip with 256x256 pixels each 55 × 55 µ m2 for the data readout is used. The total active area of the chip is approximately 1.4×1.4  cm2. For the ionization of the filling gas a UV laser (266 nm) with an adjustable repetition rate between 1 and 2000  Hz is used. The laser can be shot into the chamber at three different positions, correspoding to drift length of 8.7, 18.9 and 33.9 cm. With the Timepix chip it is possible to measure the drift time, the profile of the laser as a function of drift time and the number of created electrons during a specific time window. Track properties and spatial resolution in dependence of the drift length z are investigated for the prototype.
