A timing detector for the ATLAS AFP projectMichael Dueren, Hasko Stenzel, Kristof Kreutzfeldt, and •Yong Liu — II. Phys. Inst., Univ. Giessen, 35392 Giessen, Germany

The ATLAS Forward Proton (AFP) project is an upgrade plan to operate detectors continuously at high instantaneous luminosities of up to 1034 cm−2s−1 in the vicinity of the beam and measure precisely very forward protons at ATLAS in conjunction with the corresponding central detectors as a means to study Standard Model physics and to search for new physics phenomena.

AFP consists of movable beam pipes housing silicon pixel tracking detectors and fast timing detector at ∼220 m upstream and downstream of the ATLAS interaction point. One prototype of the fast timing detector exploits quartz Cerenkov radiators coupled to a digital silicon photomultiplier. This presentation will focus on the design of this prototype and results of testbeam measurements.
