Behavior of the Spatial Resolution of Micromegas Detectors — •Jonathan Bortfeldt, Otmar Biebel, Ralf Hertenberger, Alexander Ruschke, Nicola Tyler, and André Zibell — LS Schaile, LMU München
A tracking system, consisting of four 90 mm×100 mm large Micromegas detectors with drift spaces around 5 mm and amplification gaps of 128 µm has been tested in 160 GeV pion- and muon-beams at the H6- and H8-beamline at CERN. Several ten million tracks have been acquired, using a Gassiplex based strip readout with 1500 channels in total and 250 µm strip pitch. Measurements with gas mixtures of Ar:CO2 85:15 and 93:7 at normal temperature and pressure and various electric field configurations allow for the optimization of detector signals and spatial resolution. For both gas mixtures and particle beams, single detector spatial resolutions well below 40 µm and efficiencies above 98% have been determined. The sparking probability per incident particle in the hadronic pion beam is around 10−5 and thus for this application negligible. We report on the dependance of the spatial resolution on pulse height, diffusion of primary ionization charge and mesh opacity.
