Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a non invasive imaging technique used in nuclear medicine, for which radioactive tracer substances are injected into the patient. Improvement of the detector sensitivity would decrease to dose on the patient therefore lower the risk of the potential health damage caused by the exposure to the injected radioactive tracer. A method of making use of Compton scattering events in the scintillating crystals which are otherwise discarded may improve the overall photon sensitivity of the detector. A GEANT4 simulation of multiple crystal channels together with detailed modelling of silicon photomultipliers for read out is carried out to investigate the method. Results are compared to the data obtained with a PET prototype.
